Every relationship has its ups and downs. You cannot really expect your marriage with your partner to be a smooth sailing one. Disagreements and arguments are all part of the challenges that every marriage will face. They should keep you and your partner strong and constantly growing, and not the other way around.

If you are looking for ways to save your marriage, here are some strategies that you can do to prevent divorce:

1. Take full control of your emotions

During confrontations, there are certain instances wherein your emotions get the better of you. You tend to spit out words that you do not really mean and end up hurting your partner. If you really want to patch things up and talk to your partner, take full control of your emotions. Do not let your anger, outrage, and disappointments win over you.

Try to deal with the situation with a clear mind. Listen to your partner and express what you want to say as calmly as possible. While this seems like a very hard thing to do, you have to believe that listening is the best for the both of you. You will never reach an agreement if the two of you will keep on shouting at each other. Know how to listen when your partner starts to talk, and ask him/her to listen to you as well.

For example if your partner wants to get out of the marriage, do not take this to heart. There is a high chance that he/she is mad as well. You should not reciprocate the feeling - that is if you want to save your marriage.

2. Good communication is the key

If your partner is still mad at you, do not force him/her to talk to you. Give your partner space and allow him/her to mull things over. Maybe your partner just needs a little time off to think about the things that are going on between the two of you. Even if you are giving your partner space, try to talk to him/her every now and then. Show how much you care, so that in time your partner will speak up and perhaps express his/her decision to save your marriage.

3. Be cautious in following other people's advice

Not all marriages were created the same, so why would you listen to other people, right? The best advice is to listen to yourself. You know your partner and your relationship best. There is nothing wrong about unsolicited pieces of advice from other people. As a matter of fact, you can use them as guidelines. But when it comes to dealing with your own marital problem, carefully analyze the strategies before employing them.

4. Seek professional counseling

There are many counselors out there who can give you professional advice when it comes to handling your relationship well. They can also teach you ways on how you can save your marriage. Having professional guidance will open out your mind to the realities of your marriage and the status of your relationship. You can try to bring your partner along if he/she wants to accompany you.

You can prevent yourself from being part of the statistics of divorced couples. There are many ways for you and your partner to live by the commitment you promised to each other in your wedding vows. You can save your marriage. It is possible. All it takes is an open communication line and mind. Listen to each other and cooperate to make your marriage work again.
