Some Christian Views on Divorce

People often ask me whether I am going to marry again. Often they are surprised by my answer. I am not sure that most people like my answer, and yet answer I do as the Spirit of God leads me to. When people ask me why I am not going to marry again, I normally tell them that I want to stay single as an honor to my first wife. If they push me, I tell them that I believe second marriages are adultery.

Many people believe that because Jesus allowed divorce in Matthew if your spouse has cheated on you, that he was also sanctioning re-marriage. People believe this is truth as the vast majority of the church divorce and re-marry. The people of God often refuse to even accept that second marriages while your first spouse in alive is called adultery by Jesus as he does here.

Mark 10:11-12 11 So He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. 12 And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery."

Most Christians I have talked to do not agree with this verse. If a person really believed that second marriages were adultery, than they might do more to save the first marriage that they are in.

I have point to make about divorce.

Jesus is called the groom of the church who are called the bride. If Jesus and the Father were like us we would have been divorced by Jesus long ago. As people of the world we covet what the world has and we sin all the time against Jesus. We commit spiritual adultery so often and if Jesus was like the average Christian who divorces he would have blotted our names out of the book of life many times.

In the book of Malachi God says that He hates divorce.

Malachi 2:16

16 "For the LORD God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one's garment with violence," Says the LORD of hosts.

"Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously."

Why do we so easily do what God hates these days?

Be Blessed
