If life is passing you by and you still haven't met that special someone, perhaps it is time to give online dating a try. Chances are, at least one of your friends is doing it, since one out of five relationships now begins online. If you're tired of blind dates, the bar scene and signing up for art classes just to try to meet someone, a better dating future could be just a few keystrokes away.

How to Become a Member of an Online Dating Site

With the popularity of dating via Internet, there are as many different types of dating websites as there are daters. If you fall into a special demographic, such as being over 40 or of a particular religious faith, you may feel more comfortable with a niche dating site tailored just toward what your requirements. On the other hand, a more general dating site may give you varied dating experience, which will help you clearly identify what you are looking for in the long run. A standard Google search should provide you with plenty of online dating options.

Setting Up a Profile

Initially, most dating websites do not charge a fee to set up a basic profile. This is where you will want to describe yourself and what you are looking for in enough detail to make you stand out from the crowd. Use a lot of adjectives and descriptive language so your profile reads in an interesting manner. If you're at a loss for words, ask a friend to describe you and then use a thesaurus to find words to present yourself in a unique way. Just remember to always be honest or it could come back to haunt you later.

When you are describing what you are looking for in a potential dating partner, try to focus on the positive and say what you do like rather than creating a list of what you don't like. Of course, if you have absolutes, like not dating a smoker, it is best to get that out in the open right away.

Your profile picture is probably the most important tool you have in determining your online dating success. It is not necessarily how you look that is going to get attention, but rather the quality of the picture that you post. With so much photo editing software available these days, there is no reason anyone has to settle for a ho-hum profile picture. For best results, take the time to crop additional people out of the picture, bring yourself closer and into sharper focus and insure that the photo has adequate lighting.

Why Online Dating is Better

Most online dating sites feature compatibility matching where you are recommended to other members based on mutual interests. There are also options to take personality inventories and other such matching programs, which makes Internet dating a much less hit-or-miss adventure than traditional methods.

After you have found someone you may be interested in, the anonymity of the Internet allows you to communicate without revealing personally identifying information. You can continue in this manner until one or both of you wants to make the leap to meeting in person.
