When the World Wide Web started to become mass market in the nineties, industry’s first reaction was to register their company’s name as a domain and quickly design a “brochure on the web”. This made sense because nobody could truly predict how things would evolve. At least you were securing names and preventing any possibilities for competitors passing themselves off as your-co.

By the time that the noughties had arrived a proportion of trades strived to boast an ecommerce section to their sites. This worked particularly well for the likes of Amazon with their on-line book store. Alternative vertical markets wanted to echo Amazon’s success. The attraction of this channel is that you can sell whilst sleeping. It was like having a shop in every village across the country and some guys were to wake up wealthier each morning.

If the truth is known, a catalogue isn’t the answer for all industries (e.g. phone systems installers). It’s OK if your goods are stand alone and non- complex but if there is a need for multiple component selection or any element of complexity then think again. Your buyers may not have the necessary technical knowledge to determine which individual parts are needed to complete the circle. But this didn’t prevent millions of firms rushing to have “e-shops”.


So why was it that vendors of phone systems rushed into this space? Sure they could discount in an aggressive way because of the lower overheads associated with transactions of this nature.
