Travel document form I 131:

The form I 131 form i-131 is used to apply for a travel document, re-entry permit, refuge travel document or advance parole which would be to include parole into the US for humanitarian reasons.

The application form i-131 can only be used by those people who are permanent resident of the United States, or by those people who have left the United States and want to apply for a re-entry permit or if they are a refugee and want to enter the US. Another class of people are those who have left the US and need an advance parole document.

The travel document travel document (or Advance parole) is a document that would allow you to leave and then enter the US if you do not have a green card yet but you had applied for it and your case is pending. It would take about three months to get the regular travel document and its available only for one year. There may be cases were you may need to exit the US (to attend a marriage,funeral christening or any other unexpected event) and you cannot afford to wait for the three months. In such cases you will have to apply for an expedited travel document.


The following steps will help you in obtaining a travel document.

Step 1

To begin with download the form i-131 from the USCIS and complete it by filling up the relevant details and mail it to the USCIS with the required documents and fees. Currently the processing fee is $305 and $80 as bio-metric fee.

Step 2

On receipt of the Notice of Action for the form i-131, connect with the USCIS (INS) using the Info-Pass.and schedule an appointment.

Step 3

Compile all the documents that could prove that you need to leave immediately(such as medical diagnostics,death certificate,birth certificate, proof that you need to finish college in your country or any other thing that will would be applicable to your situation). All this should be accompanied with 3 passport style photos.

Step 4

Appear at the USCIS office in the day of the appointment with all the documents(NOA, form i-131,3 passport style photos and any other documents that would prove that you need to leave the US urgently.


Step 5

Speak to an immigration officer explaining your case. In most cases your travel document would be approved which would be valid for one year and can be used for multiple travel. The approved travel document will be received by you through mail.

Refugee Travel documents. If you are a refugee of the United States and want to travel back to your own country then a re-entry permit should be filed with the form i-131. If you do not have a refugee travel document on hand you will be stopped in the border and not be allowed to come back..

If you are applying for renewal of your advance parole document namely I-512L or I-512, USCIS will accept and adjudicate the form I-131 filed up to 120 days before the date your current Advance Parole document expires.
