Eid is an important occasion for all Muslims. There are two Eids celebrated by Muslims in a year. The first being Eid ul Fitr, which marks the ending on the holy month of Ramadan and festivities for the end of fasting. The second Eid is Eid ul Adha which falls in the twelfth month of Islamic calendar on the tenth day of Zil Hajj, and it occurs during Hajj (Muslim Pilgrimage).

Eid Ul Fitr marks the end of the month long fasting during the month of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal, the tenth month of Muslim Calendar. It is on the first day of Shawwal that Muslims celebrate Eid which means “Festivity” in Arabic. Eid is celebrated after the sighting of new crescent on the evening before. Eid is a joyous occasion for Muslims all over the world, celebrating the achievement of month long fasting performed solely to please and serve Allah. It is not only a sacred duty of Muslims to fast all month, but a powerful way of teaching and reminding them their obligation towards those who live with poverty and suffering.


For Muslims, Eid is a day of thanksgiving. Fasting if forbidden on Eid day as it marks the celebration of the end of month long fasting. In the morning of Eid, Muslims offer special prayers, and are encouraged to enjoy a sweet snack such as dates. Other practices on this special day include bathing and adorning oneself in new or one’s best clothes. Muslims celebrate Eid by expressing thanks to Allah by means of distributing things among the poor and needy and offering special prayers. On Eid ul Adha is marked by offering special prayers and sacrificing animal. It is the Muslim holiday for sharing love. On this day, gifts are also given to children and loved ones.

There are so many gifts to choose from but some of the most common gifts include Mithai or the traditional sweets, along with Fresh Fruits and even Dry Fruits baskets. Special orders are taken for Cakes. Bangles are popular gift item among all gifts who also like applying henna for this special occasion. Kids like being gifted with toys, so different toys for different age groups wrapped and presented win little peoples hearts on this special occasion. Several Chocolate boxes and gourmet gift baskets including chocolates, and other delicious goodies also make a great gift. Presents are exchanged among families and close friends on Eid.


Special dinners are arranged for close friends and family where everyone comes together to celebrate and enjoy. It also signifies the attainment of communication with the divine spirit and religious virtue, characterized by sacrifice, self-discipline and acts of charity. Homes and mosques are decorated in anticipation for this special day. Balloons, signs and banners saying “Eid Mubarak” are put up everywhere and happiness and harmony is in the air.
