Old homes are beloved for their unique and charming characteristics. Features such as pocket doors are part of the glory of older homes. If a home is blessed with pocket doors, then it truly contains a rare treasure! The majority of modern home builders have dispensed with the expense of real wood doors, not to mention the added work of insetting recessed doors!

Naturally, pocket doors provide the advantage of allowing a space to be completely open or completely isolated; however, this can lead to a dilemma when choosing wall to wall carpet. Is there enough clearance under the doors to add the depth of the carpet and the carpet pad, or would it be necessary to shave off a portion of the historic doors? Using two custom area rugs on either side of the space is the perfect solution! Homeowners have the option to select a rug that matches the exact dimensions of the room, mimicking the warmth and comfort of wall to wall carpet without the need to alter the doors themselves.

Stylistically, the “problem” of two partially joined rooms can be turned into a decorating advantage! Using two area rugs allows for several exceptional design options. First, custom area rugs for both sides of a pocket door can be made identical—creating a sense that the rooms are joined and giving a larger, more open feel to the space. However, home decorators can also choose to select two completely different rug styles, allowing each room to capture an individual “salon” feel.

Finally, with custom area rugs, there is also the option to select two corresponding, complementary rugs. Try selecting rugs of the same material but in different colors. This look will bring the rooms together while allowing each space to develop its own design foundation. An edgy look can be achieved by pairing a rug in a warm hue with a parallel rug in a cool hue—this gives the rooms a sense of depth and movement.

Find a stunning patterned rug with multiple color options and use a different version of the pattern in each room. Using a light version of the pattern in one room and a dark version in the other will produce a dramatic contrast. Alternately, a subdued and tasteful difference can be achieved by using a neutral-toned pattern on one side of the door and a slightly different version of the same pattern in the adjoining room.

While the idiosyncrasies of older homes can create decorating and furnishing challenges, the results will be stunning. An individual approach to style and décor always creates the most eye-catching and memorable end products.
