Private investigators are investigators who work for private citizens and companies, meaning they don't usually work for police or other government organizations. You hire an investigator to work for you and look after your interests. They are on your side.

What Private Investigators Do

Individuals often hire PI's to obtain information regarding specific people. For example, an investigator might find a missing person or conduct surveillance to find about a persons habits, conduct, affiliations, fidelity and such. A private investigator may also conduct investigations regarding the credibility of witnesses; the location or recovery of lost or stolen property; or to find the causes for fires, libels, or losses. It is in this capacity that you can find them working for insurance companies and investigating suspicious claims.

How To Hire A PI

When hiring a PI, it is important to hire someone who has been licensed and who has the experience that you need. In many states, the requirements are minimal, simply requiring that the person be 21 years old, a U.S. Citizen and "of good moral character." However, some states, such as New York, have extensive requirements including passing a comprehensive exam and requiring the investigator to show that he or she has extensive investigative experience. It is for this reason that many people choose to hire a New York private investigator. They have the experience and credentials to take on the toughest of cases. In fact, many New York private investigator agencies hire former NYPD detectives. These are people who have been working in the field for decades and have the instincts and experience that non-NYPD detectives have a hard time matching.

Whoever you hire, make sure to do some research. Find someone that you are comfortable working with and who has the credentials and experience to help you. You will want to ask them if they have handled cases similar to yours and have them give you an overview of what they can do to solve your case.
