Oklahoma Car Accident Statistics – Important Info for Drivers

In 2003 there were a total of 668 people killed in motor vehicle accidents. A total of 65% were due to a vehicle leaving the road while another 20% took place at or near an intersection. A total of 15% of these accidents involved a large truck, with a total of 42 bicyclists or pedestrians killed. Alcohol was found to be a contributing factor to more than 30%, while speed was a factor in more than 41%. A total of 546 motorists were in small passenger vehicles, with 9 being children under the age of 5 years. More than 60% of all fatalities wore no seat belt or restraints including 8 children under the age of 5 years having no safety seat. A total of 43 motorcyclists were killed and 33 of these wore no helmet or safety gear.
In 2002 there were a total of 739 deaths due to motor vehicle accidents. A total of 30% were found to be due to alcohol, and speed was a factor in 24% of all other accidents. A total of 603 fatalities were in small passenger cars and 12 of these were children under 5 years of age. More than half of all fatalities were found to be using no restraints or seat belts, 5 being children under 5 years of age with no safety seats. A total of 39 motorcyclists were killed and 29 of these wore no helmets.
In 2001 there were 682 deaths due to car accidents. Alcohol was involved in 40%, with speed being involved in another 42%. A total of 560 fatalities were in small passenger vehicles, 9 of which were children under the age of 5 years. More than 60% of all occupants wore no seat belt or restraints including 4 children under the age of 5 having no safety seat. A total of 39 motorcyclists were killed, 33 wore no helmet.
In 2000 there were another 650 accident related deaths. A total of 30% were due to alcohol related circumstances, with speed being responsible for another 36%. A total of 545 people were in small passenger vehicles, with 9 children under the age of 5 years being killed. More than 60% had no seat belts or child seats including 6 children under the age of 5 years. There were 24 motorcyclist deaths and 16 wore no helmet.
