Immigration Options in Australia

The Australian economy has witnessed tremendous growth in the recent years. With its abundant physical resources, Australia has enjoyed a high standard of living ever since the nineteenth century. It has made a comparatively large investment in social infrastructure, including education, health and transport. Melbourne was recently rated the world’s most livable city recently and outstrips Sydney in the number of immigrants that annually settle here. Sydney has also received similar recognition and was voted as one of the top ten cities in the world in terms of quality of life.
Australia is the third most preferred immigration destination in the world. This country is known all over the world for its multicultural society, economic living and low-cost education facilities. This culturally diverse society is a mix of indigenous people and settlers from all around the world. According to a report, over 6 million people from 200 countries have immigrated to Australia.
Immigrants have made a major contribution to shaping modern Australia and its economy and account for almost one-quarter of the total population. The country follows non discriminatory immigration policies and all immigrants must meet the same selection criteria. The country has an excellent migration policy for skilled workers.
Student Visas are granted only to those who are registered on a full-time academic course. Student visa holders enjoy a lot of benefits like access to subsidized health cover and can apply for part-time jobs. Courses under three months of duration can be taken on a visitor’s visa or on a working holiday visa.
The general skilled migration program offers applicants the opportunity to migrate to Australia on the basis of their skills or educational background. This immigration program is for highly skilled immigrants who can make a significant contribution to the country‘s economy. Applicants must meet the minimum test pass mark to qualify as skilled permanent residents. The minimum pass mark for the General Skilled Migration Program is 120 points.
The points-based test for immigration follows a criteria of age, occupation and experience. The applicant must be less than 45 years of age and should have a minimum level of proficiency in English as tested by IELTS. The applicant’s education and work experience are also assessed by relevant authorities for determining visa eligibility.
Additional points could be awarded if one has a job offer from a certified Australian employer or if he/she is highly proficient in English. If the applicant has relatives who reside in Australia, this can also strengthen his/her application. These relatives need to provide proof of relation and their residential status.
Furthermore, if the spouse of the applicant meets the expected criteria i.e. being less than 45 years of age, a minimum level of English ability and 12-24 months of skilled work experience this will further strengthen the applicant’s chances of qualifying for a visa. There are a number of migration options for fiancés, partners, children, parents and other family members of Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens which all come under the dependent visa category.
The Permanent Resident is granted for five years. After the completion of four years, one can apply for citizenship provided the stipulated criteria are met.
