Common Causes of Large Truck Accidents

By: Penelope Stone | Posted: 16th April 2010

Large truck accidents can usually be avoided. Sometimes the fault lies with drivers of other vehicles. There are some things which you, as a driver, can avoid to make it more likely that you will avoid such problems:
• Don't drive in the blind spots of the truck driver. These spaces are beside and behind the truck, where the driver can't see you. Generally, if you can't see the mirrors, the driver can't see you or your vehicle.
• Don't suddenly switch lanes in front of a large truck.
• Don't merge suddenly in front of a truck. You will cause him to have to step on the brakes suddenly, and risk being hit.
• Don't pull over in front of a truck you have passed without adequate space.
• Don't suddenly slow down in front of a tractor trailer you have just passed.
• Don't drive between two large trucks or tractor trailers.
• Don't pass trucks without enough room.

There are also truck responsibilities when it comes to avoiding accidents. Some of the main causes of this type of accident are the fault of the truck driver or the trucking company:
• Sometimes there has not been proper training in driving the truck, safety measures while driving, or being a defensive driver on the road. Lack of training in any of these areas may cause not only poor driving habits, but may actually cause the driver to break the law unknowingly.
• Companies allowing longer road times, insisting on certain travel times being met, and offering bonuses for arriving at a destination quicker.
• Mechanical problems with the trucks not being taken care of properly.

If you have been in an accident involving a tractor trailer or a large truck, you may be eligible to take the case to court in the form of a lawsuit. If a trucking company is not following the law in what they encourage their drivers to do, or if the driver was speeding or breaking any other traffic laws, or even being negligent, you may have a case you will be able to settle in court with a lawsuit. You don't have to allow your pain and suffering to go without a settlement. If they are at fault, you can be compensated for damages and suffering.
