Like most people, you'll probably be out and about this winter to shop, travel, and do other things like go to parties and have get-togethers with friends and family members. There's nothing wrong with any of that, but you'll want to take your time and do it safely so that you can be a good driver. An ordinary driver will simply react to the road conditions that are suddenly presented to him or her, but a good driver will anticipate these potential conditions and be prepared for them so that they can be avoided from a hazard perspective. There are a lot of traffic accidents out there every year, and not all of them can be avoided. However, the majority of them can be avoided or lessened in severity, by making sure that you and your car are ready for winter driving. Check your battery, ignition, lights, and brakes. These are all crucial areas of the vehicle and they need to be operating well at all times, but especially in the winter when temperatures are cold, visibility might be low, and the roads can be very slippery.

Another thing you need to really pay attention to in order to avoid problems is your tires. They are crucial to keeping you from sliding around on slippery roadways, but they can only do their job if they are properly inflated and properly cared for. In other words, if the tread has worn away the tires won't do what they should and you might find yourself sliding right into someone else's vehicle. While you're taking care of those items, you'll also want to add a winter driving kit to your vehicle. It should contain everything you'll need to survive for a while if you get stranded, including water and food. You should also have a flashlight, flares, a blanket, snow chains, and jumper cables, as well as an ice scraper and something to de-ice your fuel line. Some people also put paper towels, a first aid kit, and extra clothing in their winter weather kits. You might never need your kit, but if you do, you'll be very glad that you have it with you.
